The Xspuds
February 16th, 2006
Retired the ancient sketches and uploaded the new character linework for 2006. The pics were drawn using ink and a dip pen onto tracing film. They were then scanned with some minor touchup in Photoshop. Somewhere along the way, Don became a samurai, Martin got a cooler, fluffier coat, Isaac got ruffles and Seb found himself with torn clothing.

Aki Satsumaimo's portrait has been updated. Her facial structure is much better now, as is her vest.

I'm not going to say too much about this project just yet. Back in 1999 I created a film clip called "Tempest" for the Kool Skools recording project. It was a culmination of my design knowledge at the time and pushed my skills in 3D, filming, editing, printwork and more.
The Xspuds will be the second major culmination of everything which I know now - and a lot more things which I'll be learning along the way. Although the project has changed format and direction several times since it was flippantly called into existence back in 1998, its current course should prove quite interesting indeed.
Illustrations
October 21st, 2005
I've added two illustrations of Butt Ugly Dumb Guy. Before I embarked on reillustrating the episodes, I wanted to tweak up his design a little bit. Pictured are naked and armoured versions. He needed a decent underlying structure, so I spent a lot of time on the basic form without armour and yes, he used to be a lot fatter. However since I gave him wings he had to be lighter, thus the body became more wasp-like. It was difficult stylising the thorax to cut forwards from the back, as it resulted in a very feminine chest. The armoured version is a big improvement over the naked. Note, the naked version has shadows drawn for where the armour sits.

Various pictures from over the years which I have drawn. Many of these images were drawn using Adobe Illustrator.
Some of these illustrations come from unfinished projects of their own. Some come from university projects and some are just done for amusement. Many are quite old.
Spirograph Line Studies
October 20th, 2005
I've always been fascinated by geometry.
There's just something that can be so elegant, so natural... when you construct with mere lines. These studies are based on some line drawings which I used to do a long, long time ago with a ruler and paper. Although each final design is constructed from simple geometric shapes and straight lines, they have a certain inherent complexity of their own.
Flash Experiments
Please Note
These source files are provided as is. Try searching for information on the code if you are having difficulty understanding it. Some projects are better commented than others, depending on how fast I was writing it at the time.

I have to say, I love Macromedia Flash. It's a very visual program; The perfect combination of programming environment and design tool. What I love most is the way you can write code and visually see the results, then dive in and check out what's going on.
Therefore, over the years I've made many little Flash files; Some for elements of larger projects and others just for fun. I must warn you though, many of these examples are very old and the code isn't necessarily the most pretty. Some were superceded after they were created. The rain code has been improved dramatically beyond the version provided here for example.
